A Transformer Oil BDV (Breakdown Voltage) Tester is a critical instrument used to measure the dielectric strength of insulating oil in power transformers. The breakdown voltage value directly indicates the oil's ability to withstand electrical stress without failure — a fundamental parameter for assessing transformer health and operational safety.

In the United Kingdom, transformer oil BDV testing is governed by IEC 60156 and BS EN 60156 standards, which specify the test procedures for determining the dielectric strength of insulating liquids. UK power utilities, Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and independent electrical testing laboratories are all required to perform regular BDV tests as part of their asset management and preventive maintenance programmes.

The test works by applying a progressively increasing AC voltage across two electrodes submerged in the oil sample until electrical breakdown occurs. The voltage at which breakdown happens — the BDV — is recorded and averaged over multiple tests. A higher BDV value indicates cleaner, drier oil with greater insulating capability, while a low BDV signals contamination by moisture, particles or degradation by-products that require immediate attention.
